Generating continuous maps of genetic diversity using moving windows

Genetic diversity plays a key role in maintaining population viability by preventing inbreeding depression and providing the building blocks for adaptation. Understanding how genetic varies across space is, therefore, of interest conservation genetics. Here, we introduce wingen, an r package calculating continuous maps diversity, including nucleotide allelic richness, heterozygosity, from standard genotypic spatial data using moving window approach. We provide functions to account variation sample size rarefaction, create kriging-interpolated mask any areas that are outside area interest. Tests with simulated empirical datasets demonstrate wingen can successfully capture landscapes both reduced-representation whole genome sequencing datasets. For datasets, wingen's be run easily on laptop computer, options parallelization increase efficiency running larger provides novel computationally tractable tools creating informative applications prioritization as well landscape analyses.
